Really enjoyed reading this, Louise - though it revived my shame at once praising a student's handwriting at a parents' meeting when his father interrupted with, 'Enough of all the stuff he has to work on, what is he good at?' It was all I could think of at the time and I guess it was better than, 'Nothing much'! Just.

Did you read 'A Machine-Shaped Hand' when it came out in March? (Link here if not: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2025/mar/12/a-machine-shaped-hand-read-a-story-from-openais-new-creative-writing-model) - I guess we are seeing some of the features of that model in GPT5?

Thank you again - lots to think about here

Hi Mark! Thanks so much for the link. I have not read that before. That's an interesting connection to what we are seeing now. And as to the father's comment -- oh man, haven't we all been there! The truth is not always kind.

I find the 'this is a big deal' thing pretty boring. Feels like a 4chan intellectual showing off with something mid that he erroneously believes is brilliant.

Thanks E.S. Haven't thought about 4chan in a long time but it's a very evocative description. It made me think whether this might also be a symptom of this model's constant desire to please.
